Administration
Method of administration
ENTONOX is generally administered via a mouthpiece attached to a demand valve system. The demand valve can be fitted to either a standard pipeline wall outlet or to the regulator on the cylinder. By the patient breathing normally through the mouthpiece the demand valve is opened and the gas delivered. The gas flows out of the equipment and is absorbed through the lungs. The valve closes when the patient stops inhaling.
Alternatively, the gas may be delivered using a face mask. By the patient holding the mask securely around the mouth and nose and breathing normally the gas will be delivered.
Ideal for self-administration
The gas mixture is normally self-administered under medical supervision. If the patient receives more gas than necessary, the patient will become drowsy causing them to drop the mouthpiece or mask and the gas will stop flowing. As the patient breathes ambient air, the ENTONOX effects rapidly wear off and the patient will regain consciousness.
Effect after four to five breaths
The analgesic effect of ENTONOX is seen almost immediately after four to five breaths and reaches its maximum effect within two to three minutes. Inhalation should commence shortly before the desired analgesic effect is required. It should continue throughout the painful aspects of the procedure, or for as long as the analgesic effect is desired. Following discontinuation of the administration, the effects wear off quickly, within a few minutes. Additional analgesia may then be required, according to the individual reaction of the patient.
Ceasing administration
When administration has ended, the patient should be allowed to recover under calm and controlled conditions – until the patient’s degree of consciousness has recovered satisfactorily.
Drive time
BOC Healthcare has undertaken a clinical trial to secure a significant change to patient drive time for its ENTONOX license. This change means your patient can drive home just 30 minutes after ENTONOX administration, provided you have judged them competent to drive and the patient feels able to do so.
